Iceland's weather and roads change quickly. Before every driving day, check three official sources, leave a travel plan if you go anywhere remote, and know the emergency number.
Your morning routine
- Roads: umferdin.is Live map of closures and conditions in English; www.road.is redirects there [1]. Traffic service by phone: 1777 [2].
- Weather: vedur.is Forecasts and weather warnings from the Icelandic Met Office, plus earthquakes and volcanic activity [3].
- Alerts: safetravel.is Current travel alerts in one place [4]. Safetravel is run by ICE-SAR, the volunteer search and rescue association with 4,500+ volunteers [5].
- Google Maps is not enough It may not show closures [6].
Leave a travel plan
Going hiking, into the highlands or off the main routes? Leave a travel plan on safetravel.is with someone who is not on the trip and can react if you do not check in [7]. The Safetravel app can send your GPS location to 112 [5].
Emergency: 112
Call 112 in any emergency. Answered 24 hours a day, all year; you can also use the app, SMS or web chat. If calling 112 fails, try +354 599 0112 [8].
Known hazards
Reynisfjara and other black-sand beaches
Sneaker waves and falling rock have cost lives. Follow the warning lights: at orange, stay at least 25 m from the sea; at red, the beach is closed and you should use the viewing area [9].
Highland roads and rivers
F-roads are usually closed from mid-September until June or July. Not every 4x4 suits every F-road, and no insurance covers damage while crossing a river [10]. Read our F-roads section.
Winter driving
Mountain passes on the Ring Road can close from September to May [11]. Speed limits apply only in the best conditions [12]; slow down for ice, wind and darkness, and be ready to wait a day.
Volcanic activity on Reykjanes
When we checked on 24 October 2026, safetravel.is showed a notice about eruptions and earthquakes on the Reykjanes peninsula [5]. Check safetravel.is and vedur.is for the current status before visiting the area [3].
Nature rules
- Off-road driving is illegal and punishable by fines or imprisonment [13].
- Stay on paths in geothermal areas; Strokkur's eruptions reach up to 30 m [14].
